How the DSM 5 May Impact IEPs and 504 Plans- What Parents and Professionals Need to Know

The new version of the DSM 5 includes some significant changes in criteria for a variety of diagnoses. Dr. Mary Alvord will discuss how professionals may use these changes as well as other classification systems that will be utilized. She will highlight some of the most important specific changes in the DSM 5. Rich Weinfeld will discuss how diagnosis is used by schools to make IEP decisions. Finally, he will explore how the changes in the DSM 5 may impact identification and services for students through IEPs and 504 plans.
Presenters: Rich Weinfeld, Director and Founder of Weinfeld Education Group, LLC, he continues to serve as an Educational Consultant. His 30 year career in MCPS included a variety of special education leadership positions, culminating in directing the county's GT/LD Programs. Rich taught at Johns Hopkins, authored numerous articles, and co-authored Smart Kids with Learning Difficulties (1st and 2nd editions); Helping Boys Succeed in School; School Success for Kids with Asperger's Syndrome, and Special Needs Advocacy Resource Book.
